Chapter 27

Sandra lay in the dark beside her sleeping husband. She stared at her phone screen. She had searched for Jazmyn Jecks of Mount Green, Michigan, but the results were utter nonsense. She did, however, learn that the small Mount Green High School athletes were indeed the purple and gold mustangs. But there was no online evidence that Jazmyn Jecks had ever been a mustang.

She tried Jazmyn Jecks of Plainfield, Maine, but that produced nothing as well. No social media, at least not under her full name. No police logs. How could a woman like Jazmyn have such a small electronic footprint? That didn’t fit with Sandra’s mental picture of her. Did she have it all wrong? Was Jazmyn not an attention-seeking glory hound?

Finally, she put the phone down and closed her eyes. But sleep wouldn’t come. She felt she was close to figuring this whole thing out but wasn’t sure what step to take next. Ivan had to be their guy, didn’t he? But how to make sure? She had no idea.

In the morning, after several cups of coffee, she called Chip. “Did you search Ivan’s car?”

“Uh ...”

She tapped her toes impatiently. She had to leave soon to get the kids to school.

“Sandra, I appreciate you trying to help, but I can’t tell you everything.”

What? After he’d been so forthcoming the night before? Had Slaughter read him the riot act?

“And you do know it’s not even eight o’clock?”

Yes, she knew that.

“I just woke up.”

“Sorry,” she said weakly. “I couldn’t sleep. I’ve been worrying about it. I was hoping you’d found her clothes in his car and then arrested him.”

“Stop worrying. You don’t have to stress about this. You can walk away anytime.”

Yeah right. He didn’t know she’d promised her help to a dance angel. “I don’t want to walk away. I want to help.”

“I know you do.” He paused. “Look, just take a breather. I’ll have a chat with Ivan today. But you stay away from him. I don’t think he’s dangerous, but you never know.”

They said their goodbyes, and then she stared down at her phone, confused.

“What is it, Mum?” Peter asked.

“Detective Buker said that his lead suspect isn’t dangerous. Isn’t that weird? Aren’t murderers, by definition, dangerous?”

He shoved the second half of his Pop-Tart into his mouth. “Maybe he doesn’t think he did it.” He chewed and swallowed. “Maybe he’s not really his lead suspect.”

“Maybe,” Sandra said thoughtfully.

She herded the kids into the van and took them to school, still mulling the case over in her mind. When she’d dropped them off, she called Joyelle. She didn’t want to go home.

Joyelle excitedly agreed to meet her for coffee.

When Sandra told her that Gertrude had fallen into Jazmyn’s apartment through a window, Joyelle laughed so hard her latte came out her nose. Sandra handed her one of Sammy’s unused napkins. Joyelle thanked her and then daintily dabbed at her face. “I’m so sorry I missed that.” She got herself together and then wrapped her hands around her cup and smiled at Sandra.
